Hello! My name is Jessica and I'm the writer behind Herban Yums. Originally from the Bay Area aka a foodie/environmentally conscious paradise, I fell in love with food at an early age. Little moments like going to the farmers markets on Saturday's, growing vegetables with my mom and learning how to compost in 1st grade all have helped me become more aware of what I eat and more passionate about how I cook food. Now that I live on my own in Chicago, another amazing food city, my relationship with food has changed and grown. I strive to create delicious and healthy recipes that anyone can make and enjoy.
When I was 12, I made the unusual choice to become a pescetarian. Formerly a hot dog and chicken nugget fiend, I decided that I wanted to do better for my body and knew that only making drastic changes could help me. My diet lasted for seven years until I came into contact with a particularly delicious Chicago hot dog.
I spent two years eating meat full time and in January 2017, I decided I was done and moved back to being a pescetarian. I generally eat only vegetarian and vegan meals throughout the work week and have fish on the weekends or when I go out.
I strongly believe in making healthy foods accessible to all and that everyone should have the right to choose what they want to incorporate in their diets. Whether you can't imagine not eating meat or can't imagine eating meat, this blog is for you. My goal is to provide vegans and vegetarians with additional plant based resources and meat eaters with access to meals that can easily rival some of their favorite meat classics. I hope that anyone who reads this blog learns that eating plant based meals can be easy, fun and delicious.
