Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

Vegan chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie. Whoo! That’s a mouthful. I really did try to make that name shorter, but I wanted to give you some clear background information on this smoothie upfront. I had three distinct goals in mind when making this smoothie:

  1. Make sure its packed with protein.
  2. Make sure the banana taste isn’t overwhelming
  3. K.I.S.S.-Keep It Simple Sweetie (always my hardest goal!)

The most common questions vegans and vegetarians tend to get revolve around sources of protein, but not so surprisingly, protein doesn’t just appear in meat. There are about a thousand ways to incorporate protein into your diet as a vegan or vegetarian, some of which become more obscure as a person dives deeper into their lifestyle. One food we can all be on the same page about are nuts. In this case, peanuts.

Did you know that two tablespoons of peanut butter has on average, 16% of your recommended daily value of protein? Next time someone asks you about your source of protein, you can go ahead and whip out that fact or make me very happy and just tell them about this recipe.

Not only does this vegan chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie have the added protein of peanut butter, but it also incorporates almond milk, aka more nuts! Naturally high protein drinks mean you can hit the gym, build muscle, and leave that weird powdered drink you just shook up behind.

As far as the taste of banana, I’m not a fan of it. Sort of like a kid who likes ketchup, but hates tomatoes, bananas and I have an off and on relationship. Our relationship is generally on a hiatus when it comes to smoothies, which is why I really tried to mask some of that strong banana taste with chocolate and peanut butter. As tempting as it might be to omit the banana they do carry quite a bit of fiber that makes it worth it. However, if you have a good banana substitute you know of, I want to hear all about it in the comments.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Top

While I really do love being elaborate, I decided to borrow my middle school math class mantra and keep it simple. This vegan chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie (Is it getting easier to say now?) is made with just five simple ingredients, free of added sweeteners, is under 400 calories and can be prepared in 30 minutes or less.

Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

(Makes about 24 oz or 2 servings)

  • 2 frozen bananas, peeled and chopped (The older, the better. Frozen bananas will provide the natural sweetness)
  • 2 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened peanut butter
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth.
  2. Drink immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

Enjoy!
